Tess Johnson's Story
Tess Johnson, RN, PHN, IBCLC, is a registered nurse and an International Board Certified
Lactation Consultant, as well as a wife and mom of three happy, healthy breastfed
girls. Her main objective is to encourage and empower the mothers and families
of the Fresno/Clovis area to achieve their wellness goals by providing compassionate,
family-centered lactation care. She recognizes that most mothers have at
least a little anxiety related to breastfeeding, but she also knows that
a bit of skillful, gentle, and family-centered lactation support can get
moms through it all. Having worked with thousands of mothers and babies in a hospital-based lactation department throughout
the years, Tess has seen amazing things happen when the right help arrives
when needed. She will enthusiastically assist you to a peaceful and confident
breastfeeding relationship with your baby.
Mission Statement
Tess Johnson Lactation Services will provide optimal care to the mothers,
babies, and families of the Fresno/Clovis area through evidence-based practice,
compassionate breastfeeding counseling, and an awareness that each family
has a unique set of strengths, needs, and goals. Additionally, this service
will be conducted with a sense of global preservation in mind, because it
is everyone’s responsibility to minimize our impact on the Earth.
Company Background
Tess Johnson, RN, IBCLC has been an active member of the Fresno/Clovis
area since 1989. Tess has participated in recent World Breastfeeding Month
activities such as the Breastfeeding Walk held at Woodward Park annually,

the region for a very long time.
What's A Lactation Consultant?
You will often hear of a Lactation specialist referred to as a Lactation
Consultant, but what does that really mean? There are Lactation Educators,
Lactation Counselors, and Lactation Consultants, but each of these classifications
holds a different set of skills and educational qualifications. The Lactation
Educator and Counselor have attended a 40 to 45 hour course in lactation
management or teaching, which allows them to teach or counsel mothers who
have general breastfeeding questions and concerns. The International Board
Certified Lactation Consultant has documented thousands of practice hours
before sitting for an internationally standardized exam. Upon passing this
exam and proving the required practice has been completed, this individual
can call herself a Lactation Consultant, or IBCLC. While not all IBCLC's
are registered nurses, the health assessment and care planning background
of an RN's training is a great asset to her practice as a Lactation Consultant.
A combination of an RN and IBCLC licensure, therefore, indicates that the
practitioner may adequately assess the health of both mother and baby, identify
areas which deviate from normal, and create a plan of care which aims to
improve the wellness outcomes for the family with breastfeeding goals. In
addition to being a registered nurse and an IBCLC, Tess is also licensed
as a Public Health Nurse, indicating a deeper knowledge base about the individual's
health as it relates to the community, and a Registered Lactation Consultant,
indicating that she can be considered an expert in the field of lactation
management.
